Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced Case Study

Derbyshire Constabulary has described the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced as a game-changer.

PC Tom Gee said:

  • The drone's upgraded camera specs enable 'more confident searches';
  • The Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced is the best in the series, with its higher-resolution thermal sensor providing superior details compared to the M2E Dual;
  • The improved visual sensor is a 'big advantage', allowing the Force to cover more ground and zoom in without having to bring the drone closer;
  • Derbyshire Police is using the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced as part of a drone fleet, which includes the DJI M300 RTK.

Frequently Asked Questions

DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced commonly asked questions and answers.

Does the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced have Optical Zoom?

No - there's no optical zoom on the M2E Advanced - but the 32x digital zoom produces great results.

When on an automated mission can the thermal camera take pictures as well as the visual camera?

Of course - when flying a mission the images from both thermal and RGB sensors will be saved on the SD card.

Why is the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced better than the Dual?

Primarily the thermal resolution. In terms of numbers, the Advanced M2E has a thermal camera which is 4 times better than the Dual.

This is a noticable increase in resolution which pilots will definitely appreciate.

On top of that, the Dual does not support the use of DJI's RTK module - to give even more accurate positional data.
Does the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced have an IP rating or is it waterproof?

No - the M2E Advanced has no IP rating and is not waterproof.

Which app do I use to fly the M2E Advanced?

The DJI Pilot app is the only DJI app used to fly the Advanced M2E.

Third-party apps using the DJI Mobile SDK are also supported.
Can I use the iOS version of the Pilot app to fly this drone?

No - the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced Drone cannot be flown using the iOS version of the Pilot App.

Please use the included Smart Controller Enterprise to fly the M2E Advanced.
Can I add timestamp watermarks to the photos I take with this drone?

Yes - timestamp watermarks can be added to images taken with the RGB/Visual camera only .

Unfortunately, you cannot add a timestamp watermark to images taken using the thermal camera.
Can I use the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced with my DJI FlightHub subscription?

No - Currently DJI FlightHub has no support for this new drone.

Which accessories can I use from the original Mavic 2 Enterprise series?
- Batteries
- Chargers
- Propellers
- Case
- Speaker
- Spotlight
- Beacon
- Extended Cover Port
Is PPK available when using the RTK module on Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced?
No - Unfortunately the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced with RTK module does not support PPK.
Can I use the D-RTK2 Base Station with this drone when RTK module is fitted?
No - the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced with RTK module is not compatible with the D-RTK2 base station.

Please connect to an NTRIP network.
How does the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced's camera compare to the Phantom 4 RTK for mapping?
Going by the camera only, the Phantom 4 RTK has a larger sensor size to allow for greater detail and reduce the chance of noise in the dataset.

It is worth noting that the RTK Module for the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced will not georeference with RTK accuracy and can only be used with an RTK Network. The RTK Module enables a more stable connection and flight, especially in areas where there is high electromagnetic interference. The geotags will be written with standard GPS accuracy of around 1.5m.

Ultimately, the M2EA is not a mapping solution - whereas the Phantom 4 RTK is a dedicated low-altitude mapping solution. Instead, the Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced is a tool for all inspection needs, and an important drone for public safety missions.

Drone Laws, Licences and Training Requirements

Drone Registration

Do I need UK drone registration?

Yes, you will need to register. Visit the CAA’s DMARES website. If you have already registered and have an Operator ID, ensure this is attached to your Mavic 2 Enterprise Series drone(s).

Where Can I Fly?

Without taking a drone training course, you will have to fly by the rules of the Open Category’s A3 subcategory (fly far from people). This says:

  • No uninvolved people present within the area of flight;
  • No flight within 150m horizontally of residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational areas.

Want more freedom? Take a drone training course.

Training Options

A2 CofC

An A2 CofC allows operations in the A2 subcategory (fly near to people) of the Open Category. This permits flights up to 50m horizontally from uninvolved people. This is allowed during the Transitional Period, which runs in the UK until December 31, 2022.

GVC

For operations which pose a greater risk than the Open Category or fall outside the Open Category perimetres, a GVC is required to apply for an Operational Authorisation to fly in the Specific Category.

How Do I Get an A2 CofC or GVC?

Complete an A2 CofC or GVC with heliguy™ - a UK CAA-approved Recognised Assessment Entity - through our online training portal.

The A2 CofC involves a syllabus, followed by a multiple choice examination (sat remotely with Heliguy) and a period of practical flight training.

The GVC involves a syllabus, followed by a multiple-choice examination (sat remotely with Heliguy). Candidates are also required to produce an Operations Manual, and will undergo a practical flight assessment with a flight examiner.

Book an A2 CofC Course Book a GVC Course

Can I Fly Commercially With An A2 CofC or GVC?

Yes. Having an A2 CofC allows you to operate commercially. But the A2 CofC is not specifically a commercial permission; it is a competency which permits flights in the A2 subcategory, regardless of recreational or commercial flying.

You can fly commercially in the Open Category without an A2 CofC, but your operations will be restricted to the conditions of the A3 subcategory.

The GVC allows you to apply for an Operational Authorisation, which has replaced the Permission for Commercial Operation (PfCO), to fly in the Specific Category - geared towards enterprise drone pilots and for operations outside the remit of the Open Category.

Permission For Flight Association Members

Members of Flight Associations can fly under an Article 16 authorisation, which enables flights up to 30m of uninvolved people and 30m horizontal distance from an assembly of people in certain locations - without having to do an A2 CofC or GVC. Article 16 cannot be used for commercial reasons, though.

What Happens If I Had A Valid PfCO?

Holders of a Standard Permission valid beyond December 31, 2020, will have their permissions brought into line with the new Operational Authorisation (which has replaced the PfCO) to enable operations in the Specific Category. On renewal, this permission will become an Operational Authorisation. This means that you will not need to sit a GVC course yet, but will be required to complete a PfCO to GVC conversion course before January 1, 2024.

From January 2023 (End of Transitional Period)

The rules will change for DJI aircraft in their current form. Updated information released nearer the time.
