DJI has unveiled the OM 4 - the latest in its range of popular Osmo Mobile phone gimbals.

So how does it compare with its predecessors, especially last year's release, the Osmo Mobile 3?

Well, in a nutshell, it has an innovative magnetic quick-release design, stronger motors to support heavier phones, and an exciting array of smart shooting modes.

There is certainly enough of a difference between the two models to warrant an upgrade, or to go straight to the OM 4 if you haven't already got a phone gimbal.

Design

Both the DJI OM 4 and Osmo Mobile 3 are foldable gimbals, meaning they are easily transportable - perfect for content creation on the go.

There also isn't too much difference between the weight of either model.

But the clincher for the OM 4 is its new magnetic quick-release design which simplifies the shooting experience, enables smartphones to be quickly attached and detached from the gimbal, and means almost no levelling is required.

So how does it work?

Users have two options.

The first is attaching the lightweight metal clamp to the back of your phone (it can remain fixed during daily use) and then instantly attaching it to the DJI OM 4 when required.

The other option is to stick a magnetic mount with ring holder onto the back of your phone, making it easy to snap it onto the OM 4.

It's a nice touch, and thankfully both the magnetic ring holder and the magnetic smartphone clamp come with the OM 4 as standard.

On the subject of smartphones, the OM 4 has upgrqaded motors to allow it to carry heavier phones (up to 290g), compared to the Osmo Mobile 3.

The OM 4 also caters for more recent phones, such as the iPhone 11 series and Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

This gives you more options and makes the OM 4 a more versatile phone gimbal, ensuring a better and more adaptable shooting experience.

Stabilisation

There's actually no real difference between the two when it comes to stabilisation, as they both benefit from three-axis stabilisation (forward-backward, left-right, and side-to-side).

This means that the gimbal will stabilise any movements made in those directions, resulting in shake-free footage.

DJI OM 4 v DJI Osmo Mobile 3: Intelligent Features

The DJI OM 4 has some pretty cool new features which set it apart from the Osmo Mobile 3.

Panorama

The first is its wider array of panorama modes, including the quirkly-named CloneMe Panorama.

The OM4 CloneMe Panorama allows the user to add multiple versions of a person or subject into one shot for a unique and creative effect.

This clever little feature creates an epic panorama shot that pauses in between each shot to let you strike a different pose.

The OM 4 also allows users to shoot a stunning 240° panorama image that captures a wide-view of your subject. This trumps the Osmo Mobile 3's 180°. It's a mega feature, especially when you want to capture breathtaking landscapes.

Both the OM 4 and the Osmo Mobile 3 have a 3X3 panorama mode, combining nine images into a super-wide-angle shot.

Dynamic Zoom

Well, now you can create this super cool warping effect easily with the OM 4, which automatically adjusts the zoom to give your content a visually-appealing cinematic look.

The OM 4's Dynamic Zoom feature builds on the success of the Osmo Mobile 3's Dolly Zoom function.

SpinShot Mode

Activated in the DJI Mimo app and using the joystick, this novel feature enables the gimbal to rotate the phone while capturing video to give a spinning effect.

The result? A unique and fun shot.

Sport Mode, Gesture Control, And ActiveTrack

The OM 4 may well benefit from the various smart modes listed above, but the Osmo Mobile 3 does share some intelligent features with its newly-launched sibling.

Indeed, both the OM 4 and Osmo Mobile 3 have gesture control, ActiveTrack 3.0, Sport Mode, TimeLapse, HyperLapse (the OM 4 also has Motionlapse), and Slow Motion.

Apps

The OM 4 and Osmo Mobile 3 are compatible with the DJI Mimo App.

This app helps to generate top-quality content easily, enabling users to control settings, adjustments and access preset modes and templates to bring content to life and share on social media.

DJI OM 4 v DJI Osmo Mobile 3: Price

On launch, the DJI OM 4 is priced £139. This presents great value, especially as this includes a range of accessories, such as the magnetic ring holder, magnetic smartphone clams, carry bag, wrist strap, and tripod.

In contrast, the Osmo Mobile 3 Combo, which includes a range of accessories, is currently £99, down from £119.

Summary

DJI may have broken with tradition by moving away from the Osmo Mobile name and rebranding its new mobile gimbal, the OM 4.

But this most recent stabiliser is more than just a name change.

Indeed there are some fundamental differences between the OM 4 and its predecessors - namely the Osmo Mobile 3 - which make it a very worthy addition to the market and will help creatives capture and produce super smart and stable content.

Some of the upgrades from the Osmo Mobile 3 are exactly what you would want for a phone gimbal; the ability to carry heavier phones, for starters, while the quick-release magnetic design is a great addition.

Then there's the matter of content creation. The OM 4 offers some quirky new features, such as CloneMe panorama, Dynamic Zoom, and Spin Shot mode to give creatives even more imaginative freedom.
