DJI Mavic 2 in Depth Series – Part 1 – Intelligent Flight Battery
DJI recently announced the latest iteration of their supreme Mavic Series, the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom quadcopters. These two new drones build on the elements that made the Mavic Pro so iconic whilst adding new advanced functionality. In our latest in-depth series, we’ll be taking a look at the two new drones and giving you tips on how to get the most from each. Our posts will be broken down into the following:

Mavic 2 Batteries
Both the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom use the same LiPo 4S Intelligent Flight Battery for power. The battery features a 3850 mAh capacity, the highest of any drone in the Mavic Series to date. The design of the battery is similar in appearance to the original DJI Mavic Pro, however, the LED indicators are now around the button and it's slightly bigger than the previous version. Mavic 2 Series Intelligent Flight Batteries The advertised battery life of the Mavic 2 Series is a maximum of 31 minutes in optimum conditions. This is the best flight time we’ve seen to date from DJI for a drone in the consumer and professional categories. It’s not a huge improvement on the original Mavic Pro, but any additional flight minutes are valuable when it comes to flying drones. Like with the Mavic Pro, the batteries on the Mavic 2 drones have a secure and reliable fit in the drone. This is aided by the battery release which must be pulled down in order to remove the battery from the drone.When installing, make sure the release clicks into place before use. Don’t install or remove a battery while powered on. The battery can be turned on/off by tapping then holding the power button. To check the power, just tap once and the LED indicators will show.
Mavic 2 Battery Safety Mechanisms
As typically found on DJI batteries, the Mavic 2 Intelligent Flight Battery is packed with safety features. These feature help to maximise the battery life and prevent damage to the battery and drone. The following features are included:- Auto Discharge – The battery will automatically discharge to less than 60% if left for more than ten days. The process of discharge usually takes three to four days. This prevents swelling of the battery.
- Temperature Detection – The battery will only charge in temperature between 5°C and 40°
- Balanced Charging – During charging, the battery cell voltage is automatically balanced.
- Overcharge & Overcurrent Protection – For additional safety during charging, the battery will automatically stop charging when it reaches 100% or if an excessive current is detected.
- Short Circuit Protection – The power supply will automatically cut out if a short circuit is detected.
- Hibernation Mode – The battery will automatically switch off if the battery is inactive for 20 minutes. If the battery level is less than 10%, the battery will enter its Hibernation Mode to prevent lasting damage to the battery. The battery needs to be charged to get out of the mode.
- Battery Cell Damage Protection – A warning message will be shown in the DJI GO 4 app if any damage to a battery cell is detected.
Mavic 2 Battery LED Indicators
- LED2 blinks twice per second – Over-current detected.
- LED2 blinks three times per second – Short circuit detected.
- LED3 blinks twice per second – Overcharge detected.
- LED3 blinks three times per second – Charger over-voltage detected.
- LED4 blinks twice per seconds – Charging temperature is too low.
- LED4 blinks three times per second – Charging temperature is too high.
Charging the Mavic 2 Batteries
There are several options available to charge the DJI Mavic 2 Intelligent Flight Battery. Both editions of the Mavic 2 include the Mavic 2 charger and one intelligent flight battery as standard. All additional chargers and the Power Bank Adapter are included in the Mavic 2 Fly More Kitor available to buy separately. It’s recommended that you avoid third-party chargers as they may cause damage to your batteries.Mavic 2 - Mains Charger
The Mavic 2 charger is a dedicated device capable of charging one battery and the remote controller at a time. A mobile device can also be charged through the USB A and micro-USB output. The charger has a 60W output with multiple outputs in 17.6V and 5V. This allows fast charging to get you back in the air as soon as possible. Estimated charge times are as follows: Battery Charging – Around 1 hour 30 minutes. Remote Controller Charging – Around 2 hours and 15 minutes. If charging a battery and remote controller simultaneous, charge times may be higher.

Mavic 2 – Charging Hub
The Mavic 2 Charging Hub is used to charge up to four batteries at a time. It’s used with the mains charger or car charger cables giving you the flexibility to use at home or on the move. The Mavic 2 Battery Charging Hub will charge batteries individually in a sequence of highest to the lowest amount of charge. This means you will receive a fully charged battery in the shortest time possible. The Charging Hub is also foldable allowing it to be transported with ease. The charging time is as follows: Battery Charging – 1 hour 30 minutes per battery.

Mavic 2 - Car Charger
The Mavic 2 Car Charger is designed to charge the Mavic 2 Intelligent Flight Battery whilst on the move. Used with the standard output port of the car, charging is available at an output of up to 80W. The charger has built-in overheating and low-voltage protection for safe charging whilst driving. Charge times are as follows: Battery Charging – Around 1 hour 30 minutes per battery.Mavic 2 – Power Bank Adaptor
Although not a charger, the Power Bank Adaptor is used to utilise remaining power in the Mavic 2 battery to charge a mobile device. It’s a great option, especially if travelling for a shoot with limited access to a power supply. The adaptor plugs into the connector on the top of the battery. There are two USB ports available to power a compatible device such as a smartphone. 20% battery charge is sufficient to complete a full charge of most available phones.
