H4-3D has been released by DJI! Here we discuss whether is is worth the wait or not.

If you are thinking about getting a GoPro Hero 4 airborne you're probably planning on doing so with the DJI Phantom 2 and a reliable FPV set up. Top marks, you're on the right track! The Hero 4 is easily the best camera for it's size and price point. When coupled with the latest incarnation of the Phantom 2 you essentially have a mini DJI S1000 and GH4. Most TV aerial work is actually shot on the P2 and Zenmuse.

So, does this mean you need to wait for the newly unveiled H4-3D? In truth, probably not. DJI have a habit of teasing us with products that aren't going to be available for a long while. The H4-3D will likely be no different - we don't have any word on UK delivery dates as of yet, nor price.

The Hero 4 already works happily on the H3-3D Zenmuse so you shouldn't hesitate in pulling the trigger if you are in the market. The two cameras are identical in terms of physical dimensions so the Hero 4 fits just as snugly as the 3. GoPro were a little cynical with their marketing when they claimed the 4 was smaller - it's merely the waterproof case that has changed; this however is irrelevant for use on the Zenmuse.

We've seen the pictures of the new gimbal and cannot see any noticeable changes over the current model. DJI themselves don't even claim any difference in their description - much of the same it seems. Check out the comparison below. The GCU Module is optional with the H3-3D as well so the two are identical in terms of features.

H4-3D

  • 3-axis high performance gimbal
  • Effortless Setup
  • Compatible with DJI flight control systems
  • Part of the Zenmuse family
  • Independent IMU
  • Online Upgrade
  • GCU Module (Optional)

H3-3D

  • 3-axis high performance gimbal
  • Effortless Setup
  • Compatible with DJI flight control systems
  • Part of the Zenmuse family
  • Independent IMU
  • Online Upgrade

Moral of the story then; the GoPro Hero 4 will integrate happily with the current H3-3D gimbal and our clients have been proving this to us with amazing 4K footage over the past few months.
